Welcome back to the blog readers. I know this is going to be a weird review, but a film is a film, and I will not go back on my promise at any point in our relationship. This review will be about the Paramount+-exclusive film Zoey 102. I was somewhat a fan of the Nickelodeon series that ran from 2005-08, and wondered if we were ever going to see the aftermath of some of the events of the series. I am happy to report that we got it. So what were my thought on this film that is actually a legitimate film? Stick around to find out.
Zoey 102 was directed by Nancy Hower from a screenplay by Monica Sherer and Madeline Whitby, based off characters created by Dan Schneider. The film stars Jamie Lynn Spears, Sean Flynn, Christopher Massey, Erin Sanders, Matthew Underwood, Abby Wilde, Jack Salvatore Jr., Thomas Lennon, and Dean Geyer. In the film, set 15 years after the events of the series, Zoey is invited as the maid of honor to the wedding of Quinn and Logan, and reunites with them and the rest of the gang from PCA.
NOTE: The majority of this review will contain spoilers, so DO NOT read ahead if you have not seen the film.
So I will not be spending that much time talking about this film, because there is truthfully not that much to talk about. But, like I said, I was surprised to see that this was a legit film with a legit runtime of an hour and 41 minutes. So I was actually getting a little excited to watch it. And I am pleased to say that this was a fun little flick. Everyone seamlessly falls back into their roles, and the jokes are funny for the most part. So I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw.
I did enjoy how the film is tied into the fabric of the series, and we get some nice updates on the characters since we last left them in 2008. Zoey is a producer on a reality television series, Chase is a school teacher, Michael is a record producer with a hit song, Quinn is a wealthy inventor, and Logan inherited his father's wealth. I do like how each character has a career that is tied to their personality, for the most part. And I do like where each character is taken in the film.
I was a fan of Dean Geyer on Glee (2009-15), but he was hilarious in the role of Todd, an actor Zoey hires to be her fake boyfriend. He oozed charisma on Glee and he oozed the same charisma here. Most of his material made me laugh the most, and it is clear he is a natural. I also appreciated how he used an American accent for Todd, but his original accent for the Australian boyfriend character Todd plays. A fun way to use his talents.
The final thing I will say about this film is I did enjoy the epilogue a hell of a lot. The eventual wedding we do get is very heartfelt and takes the viewer back to old roots, and puts a nice bow on these characters and the original series. Logan and Quinn eventually get married, but at PCA, and Zoey and Chase wind up together after all these years. It was a cute epilogue, and it will be interesting to see where we go next with these characters.
In conclusion, Zoey 102 is a heartfelt and funny return to our favorite PCA gang that keeps all the heart from the original in all the right places. Thank you all for reading, and I will see you for the next post.
