Episode Review: The Acolyte Episode 6 - "Teach/Corrupt"

Welcome back to the blog readers. To say that The Acolyte has been a real disappointing show this year is nothing short of an understatement. The writing has been poor and the story has been boring as hell, but the sole reason I have not tapped out of this series yet is because of the performances. Amandla Stenberg has been good as the twins Osha and Mae, and Lee Jung-jae has been utterly fantastic as Jedi Master Sol. And the action is downright fantastic. But everything else has been a letdown. Would we finally be treated to a good episode with this week's showing titled "Teach/Corrupt," written by Leslye Headland and Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Hanelle Culpepper? Stick around to find out.

NOTE: I will be using spoilers for my thoughts so DO NOT read ahead if you have not seen the episode.

Okay, I know that I said this for The Last of Us (2023-) and the second season of House of the Dragon (2022-), but I am running out of good things to say about this series. But it is not for the reasons that those shows are awesome; it is because this show is getting worse and worse every week. This, honestly, may be the weakest episode of the series thus far. The performances in this episode were completely uninspired and bland, and the story makes literally no sense. Oh, also, the writing sucks.

I may have said that the performances were uninspired a minute ago, but Lee Jung-jae again was less uninspired than the rest of the performances. There is still something about him that really intrigues me and compels me to continue watching, and this episode is no different. I will try to keep this review short and sweet because I do not want to talk about this for too long, so I will pair this with part of the story. I truly do not know if Sol drank some stupid juice in this episode, but he was absolutely stupid. How could you not tell the difference between Osha and Mae until the literal end of the episode? It makes the conversation he had with Mae feel so cheap and unearned because he was not speaking to Osha. And I can only imagine what he has to say to her in next week's episode.

Manny Jacinto frustrated me in this episode. On one hand, he is a very good-looking guy (who I would truthfully date). But on the other hand, his character is honestly terrible. Half-baked motivations and virtually no character development have handcuffed this character and thrown away the key. Yeah, he calls himself a "Sith," but what made him that way? What made him fall to the dark side? Why does he want a pupil and is there someone behind the scenes pulling the strings? One thing I can say is that I do not understand why he is now trying to seduce Osha to the dark side, someone who has not been in tune with the Force in years. So I do have to ask if Osha will wind up being the "acolyte." I hope we get some answers soon because this show is not only running out of time literally, it is running out of time to give me what I am looking for in terms of enjoyment and entertainment.

The Acolyte has been a mixed bag with a bunch of "what-ifs," especially when there are series like House of the Dragon on that are so much better. Thank you all for reading, and I will see you for the next post.
