Welcome back to the blog readers. We are halfway through the run of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, and I can, with confidence and certainty, say that I fucking adore the shit out of this show. It is such a charming time, and last week's episode solidified it for me. The Daniels cooked up a barn-burner for us to sink our teeth into, and I cannot wait to see where this show goes. Can we keep up the momentum as we head into this week's episode, titled "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates," written by Myung Joh Wesner, and directed by Jake Schreier? Stick around to find out.
NOTE: I will be using spoilers for my thoughts, so DO NOT read ahead if you have not seen the episode. And as always, I will not be talking about the performances of the children for obvious reasons.
It is no mistake that I have been loving this show, but I have been keeping the last few episodes at an arm's length because I ultimately do not trust these Star Wars shows (well Disney+ shows as a whole) since The Acolyte (2024) was a massive failure. We can debate on that one all you want in a rant later on. But this episode will not be the one to do it because I loved it. Not only was this the darkest episode of the show so far, Jude Law gives his best performance in the show thus far.
You know over the last few weeks that I have had nothing but good things to say about the performance of Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood. His charisma bleeds through the screen and most importantly, his chemistry with the kids is absolutely impeccable. In fact, one of the reasons this show works so well is because of that lightning-hot chemistry. And not only do we see that irresistible charisma that he has, we get to see a bit of his darker side as well. And it is very akin to the performance we see out of him in Captain Marvel (2019) (bet you forgot he was in that, didn't you?) I hope we get to see more of this side of him, because it was awesome to watch.
Now we have to get into that story because it may just be the best one so far. On At Attin, Wendle is approached by KB's parents with a desperate attempt to get more information on the children. He tries to download data but is caught by a security droid and taken to Fern's mother Fara. Once the droid leaves, Fara tells Wendle that the "Supervisor" will not help them and they are going to have to go behind the "Supervisor's" back. Meanwhile, in space, after the events of last week's episode, the crew is on the ship and they have managed to restrain SM-33 after he tried attacking the children. They are able to reprogram him from attacking again, but he slips up and reveals the name of the ship's former captain: Tak Rennod. Jod realizes this ship they are on must be the Onyx Cinder and reveals to the children that Tak was looking for the treasure on At Attin before he disappeared. SM-33 also reveals that he had a hidden stash on the planet Lanupa that more than likely has the coordinates to At Attin. When they arrive, however, SM-33 is shocked to learn Lanupa has been transformed into a luxury planet.
Jod dresses the children up as elders and attempts to bribe the resort manager into letting them stay, but he is recognized instantly by an old ally of his named Pokkit. She tips Brutus off as they attempt to look for the hideout. Wim, Fern, and SM-33 discover the location but they also run into a patron named Cthallops that is willing to help them. The rest of the crew (Neel, KB, and Jod) get chased by Brutus's forces until they run into SM-33. Once they reunite and get into the hideout, they are able to avoid booby traps and the pirates to reach the treasure he had stashed. They listen to a messed-up hologram that conceals his face and discover the coordinates to At Attin. Wim finds a lightsaber as the group discover the treasure on At Attin is a mint that can produce infinite Old Republic credits. Jod kills the pirates by filing up the chamber they are in with acid and then turns on the children, challenging Fern's captaincy. He holds a knife to her throat and makes her yield the captaincy to him. Before SM-33 can kill the kids, they escape down a secret hatch as Jod picks up the lightsaber.
I really feel for the kids here because Jod really did his best to gain the trust of these kids only to stab them in the back. I hope that they get some sweet revenge on Jod and protect their home's mint from him and anyone else looking for that treasure. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is absolutely firing on all cylinders with everything being so fun and energetic, leaving me wanting more each and every week. Thank you all for reading, and I will see you for the next post.
