Episode Review: Ahsoka Episode 3 - "Part Three: Time to Fly"

Welcome back to the blog readers. Ahsoka is the newest Star Wars Disney+ series that premiered with its first two episodes last week, and the episodes were as fun and witty as I expected them to be. But we still have a lot of season left to go, and things can happen to disappoint us. Would this be the point where this would happen? In this episode, titled "Part Three: Time to Fly," directed by Steph Green and written by Dave Filoni? Stick around to find out.

NOTE: I will be using spoilers for my thoughts, so DO NOT read ahead if you have not seen the episode.

Right off the bat, I commended the team for bringing back the charm and wit of Star Wars Rebels (2014-18). The first two episodes felt like a return to form minus a few beloved faces: Zeb, Ezra Bridger (who we will hopefully see in future episodes), and Kanan Jarrus (for obvious reasons, although I would like to maybe see flashbacks). But other than that, I am having a damn good time with this series so far. The charm and wit is absolutely present, and now I am officially on board with this series now.

At this point I think I am running out of positive things to say about Rosario Dawson's portrayal of Ahsoka Tano. Every time I see her on the screen it just gets better and better. She gets a larger opportunity to kick ass in this episode and she absolutely does that. From the intro of this episode (which I will talk about later) to her kicking ass in (and outside of) her ship, Dawson is winning me over more and more as time goes on. Literally, Ahsoka has become as wise a Jedi as Luke Skywalker, and I love to see it. Hopefully you all do too, because she deserves all the love.

Speaking of the intro to this episode, Natasha Liu Bordizzo has officially won me over with her portrayal of Sabine Wren. Her insane charisma is off the charts. For someone who is nearing 30, Bordizzo can channel her inner young adult and it is fascinating to watch. The intro to this episode sees Ahsoka resume Sabine's Jedi training, as we learn she is proficient with weapons, but not so much with tapping into the potential that is the Force. As we have found out in years prior, everyone has the capability of tapping into the Force, but not everyone knows how to. And that is something that Ahsoka is trying to teach Sabine: that even though it may not seem like it, she is more capable than she knows. She just needs to learn to tap in. That, I think, is the beauty of Bordizzo's performance. That wonder and bravado is just infectious to watch, and I think this is going to be a serious breakout role for her.

It is always nice to see Genevieve O'Reilly as Mon Mothma. She was one of the highlights of Andor (2022-present), and her personality shines. She commands the screen whenever she is on it. Whether it be in Andor when she is brokering deals and secretly wiring funds for the Rebellion, or in Ahsoka when she is fulfilling her duties as Chancellor of the New Republic, Mon Mothma is becoming a favorite character of mine in the Star Wars universe. It is really nice to see how much respect Mon Mothma has gotten in the world that they would consider her to be the leader of the New Republic. Put some damn respect on her name guys. Although fuck you and your senator friends for not believing Hera.

I do want to talk about the end of the episode, which was the battle above Seatos. In my honest opinion, this was the best space combat since Revenge of the Sith (2005). And on top of that, this was the most charming space battle since Star Wars (1977). And the relationship between Ahsoka and Sabine is at its peak in this scene as well. Between the banter amongst the two of them (and Huyang voiced by David Tennant, who I have not talked about yet) and the awesome action, this will go down as one of the better space battles in Star Wars history.

Before I let you guys go, I do want to address a point I made in the previous paragraph. That point was about David Tennant's voice role as Huyang. I cannot lie to you and say that I am familiar with his work, although I am pretty sure he was a Doctor Who. But in this series, he is absolutely brilliant. His comedic timing is impeccable, and it is perfect for the tone of this series.

Now I will let you all go, enjoy yourselves and I will see you for the review of the fourth episode.
